What this specialty covers.

Ophthalmology covers disorders of vision and diseases of the eye. Depending on the condition, treatment may involve optical correction, medical treatment, laser or surgery.

Eye surgery is short, often day-case, and that is precisely what invites people to take it lightly. Yet the pre-operative work-up — corneal topography, thickness measurement, retinal examination — decides both eligibility and the type of lens. We schedule it on site before the procedure, and a patient who is not eligible is told so.

What patients ask us.

Eligibility depends on the thickness and regularity of the cornea, on your prescription having been stable for at least a year, on your age and on the absence of keratoconus. Only the pre-operative work-up can settle it, and it sometimes concludes that another technique, or none, is appropriate.

Yes, without exception: lenses distort the cornea and would falsify the topography. Allow several days for soft lenses and considerably longer for rigid ones. The exact instruction is given before you travel.

In refractive surgery, often yes. For cataract, the two eyes are usually operated a few days or weeks apart. That determines the length of the stay, and it is stated in your proposal.

Flying is generally possible a few days after the procedure, but swimming pools, dust and make-up are off limits for longer. The surgeon gives you the instructions and the prescription for eye drops for the period that follows.

Have your file read before you decide.

A doctor reviews it and tells you what is possible, what is not and what it involves. With no commitment on your part.
