What this specialty covers.

Maxillofacial surgery treats conditions, malformations and injuries of the face, jaws and maxillofacial region. Its aim may be functional, reconstructive or restorative.

Orthognathic surgery requires orthodontic preparation counted in months, both before and after theatre. That is why we start by having the file assessed: if the preparation has not been done, no operating date means anything. Part of that work can continue at home, in coordination with the team.

What patients ask us.

In most cases, yes. Orthodontics prepares the dental arches so the jaws fit together after the bones are moved, and continues for a few months afterwards. That is what makes the pathway long; the surgeon gives you the timetable at the first opinion.

Facial swelling is considerable in the first days and the diet stays soft for several weeks. The return flight is cleared after a check, generally within a few days. The surgeon specifies when you can return to work and to sport.

Yes, since it moves the underlying bone. That is why a simulation is produced pre-operatively from the CT scan: you see what is being aimed at before committing. The objective remains functional — bite, breathing, chewing.

A panoramic radiograph, a lateral cephalogram, a CT or cone beam scan if one exists, photographs from the front and in profile, and your orthodontist's report if treatment is under way.

Have your file read before you decide.

A doctor reviews it and tells you what is possible, what is not and what it involves. With no commitment on your part.
